The Chasm Between Us

Once, your small hand fit in mine,

A perfect match, a sacred sign.

Now your eyes, like thunderclouds,

Carry storms and words unbowed.

I offer love in every thread,

But walls have risen in its stead.

Each gentle word turns sharp, unseen,

A battlefield of hearts between.

You pull away, you shut me out,

The silence thick, it screams and shouts.

I reach for you; you turn aside,

And leave me here where love can’t hide.

I long to tell you, “This will pass,

These shadows fade; they never last.”

But teenage hearts are blind to time,

To wisdom earned and love’s incline.

I see the hurt you cannot name,

A flicker ’neath your fiery flame.

Though now you rage, you’ll one day see,

The depth of love I hold for thee.

So I will wait, though time is cruel,

Through every battle, every duel.

For love, my child, is boundless, true,

And I will always fight for you.
